Three Second Review: Utu Redux

nl_utu_1200Utu Redux (1983/2013, Directed by Geoff Murphy) ★★★★★

It’s not often a Kiwi classic is dusted off and reissued for a new generation of film lovers to appreciate.

With themes of race, revenge and retribution, Utu belongs to a time when Kiwi film wasn’t shy of delving into the dark recesses of our culture and roughing things up a little.

The results of such daring are most evident in Utu’s final scene, possibly the most moving ever committed to celluloid in this country; as gritty, beautiful and relevant today as it was when it was first shown in 1983.
